Memorial County Park
Memorial Park is simply a wonderful camping experience. Nestled amongst towering redwoods are hundreds of camping sits. Some are group areas and must be reserved in advance. It is a well maintained and family friendly park designed with the casual camper in mind. It abuts the Pescadero Creek Park and combined with the shorter trails of Memorial Park offers plenty of hiking opportunities. There are spaces to accommodate RVs up to 35ft and there’s a dump station for RVs staying at the park.
A little history:
Clear cutting was prevalent in the area during the late 19th and early 20th century. Fortunately some people with enough foresight managed to buy and preserve some of the ancient redwood groves in what was once the majesty of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Memorial Park encompasses some of those stands of ancient redwoods. The county acquired the land in 1924 and was given the name Memorial Park in honor of the men of San Meteo County who lost their lives in World War 1. It was utilized during the the Great Depression as a project camp for workers hired by the Works Project Administration created by President Roosevelt and many of the parks facilities and roads were built by those workers.
