Looking north along Pescadero State Beach

Located just a mile inland from the spectacular California coast accessed by the scenic Pacific Coast Highway 1, Pescadero is ideally situated as a starting point for a day (or a week!) of beach exploration. Tide pools brimming with sea urchins, the famous marine preserve Ano Nuevo awash with sea lions, the beaches and skies filled with shore birds – the San Mateo coast is a splendor.

Below is a list of some of the official California State Beaches. Most have ample parking, easy access to the shore, and in some cases picnic facilities. Or, with a little research or input from friendly locals, you’ll also find miles of unofficial beaches affording the more adventurous plenty of privacy and solitude.

WARNING - Rip current danger

WARNING - Rip current danger

But with the beauty of a rugged coast, comes the hazards of a restless sea. So, keep in mind, if you’re standing on wet rocks and water is breaking near by, there is a real danger of ‘sneaker’ waves surprising the unwary explorer and sweeping them into the surf.

And swimming is alway dangerous due to the nature of the shore line and the rip currents it produces.

Each year fatalities occur due to people failing to understand the potential danger of sneaker waves and rip currents.

Please exercise extreme caution at all times.
